Nathan Lane's political sitcom may air in summer
by John Graves
Wonder what ever happened to Charlie Lawrence, gay actor Nathan Lane's muchanticipated political sitcom about an openly gay member of Congress that was supposed to begin airing in March?
CBS, citing a crowded spring schedule, has postponed the show's debut and may air it as a summer replacement, a move that does not bode well for its future in the fall lineup.
"We have six time periods for comedy, Chris Ender, spokesperson for CBS, told Entertainment Weekly. "There simply isn't a place to put it right now."
Happy Father's Day
Johnny Symons' Daddy & Papa, which played to great acclaim at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, will air nationally as part of the Independent Lens series on PBS stations on Tuesday, June 3 at 10 pm.
Daddy & Papa is a warm and heartfelt documentary that explores the personal, cultural and political ramifications of the growing number of gay men who are becoming dads.
Taking us inside four gay male families, the film explores the many unique issues that they face the ambiguous place of interracial families in America, the wonder and precariousness of surrogacy and adoption, the complexities of marriage and divorce within the gay community, and the legality of gay parenthood.
Where there's a Will...
Michael Joseph Gross, writing in Entertainment Weekly, took a look at why Will & Grace's Will has such trouble finding a real boyfriend even though the show's popularity
has grown so that celebrities are beating Cunningham's book, beat Far From Heaven, down the doors for guest spots.
'Will & Grace cocreator and executive producer Max Mutchnick said that viewers should not expect Will's Big Gay Romance any time soon, saying, "It's on the air every week. That's the big deal for the gay community. But I really have a problem, and I'm one of the gay writers on the show, making it like we're working toward [putting Will in a relationship]. All I care about is, I don't want to go backward."
"I don't think sex has a very comfortable life in a sitcom format," Mutchnick explained. "I always feel that it fights the humor of the genre."
Asked why audiences have seen Grace in bed with her boyfriends and her marriage to Leo this season, Mutchnick said, "It seemed very right for a 30-year-old Jewish girl in New York to desire to have a mate. And that's not to say that a 30-year-old gay male in New York shouldn't have it. But it seemed much more organic to tell [Grace's] story than it's been to tell the story of Will falling in love... we haven't found a great way to do it, so we haven't done it yet."
Mutchnick, who is single, continued, "I feel very connected to [Will] . . . and I would imagine that the next time I fall in love will probably be the time Will falls in love."
GLAAD to meet you
Will & Grace was named outstanding comedy series for the fifth time in a row at the 14th annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards.
Another winner at the April 26 awards ceremony in Los Angeles was Six Feet Under, which was named Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive time. The Hours, based on gay author Michael

Dennis Haysbert, who played the gardener in Far From Heaven, presented the film's director Todd Haynes with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for his contributions to the cultural dialogue about LBGT lives. Haynes also directed such gay-inclusive films as Poison (1991) and Velvet Goldmine (1998), The Kolzak award is given to an openly gay member of the entertainment or media community for his or her work toward eliminating homophobia.
Eric McCormack was presented with the Vanguard Award for his public commitment to the LBGT community by his Will & Grace co-star Sean Hayes.
Other winners included HBO's The Laramie Project (Outstanding Television Movie), Showtime's Resurrection Blvd. (Outstanding Individual Episode) and Latino Theater Company's Dementia, which won the award for Outstanding Los Angeles The-
ater.

Bianca gets lucky, or does she?
GLAAD, which recently criticized ABC for reports the network was not planning to show on-screen love-making scenes between Bianca and Lena on All My Children, was much happier with the history-making onscreen kiss between the two women on the April 22 episode of the afternoon soap. Some fans are concerned that lesbians
•
might be cast in a bad light due to the fact that Lena is a corporate spy sent by Michael Canbius to seduce Bianca and steal a secret formula being developed by Bianca's mother's firm.
GLAAD spokesperson Scott Seomin doesn't mind though. "This is the nature of soap operas. I love that there's a good girl and a bad girl. The moment that Bianca settles into domestic bliss and lives happily ever after, that's when viewers tune out. This is very much on a par with what happens with straight characters. What a great storyline." Catch the waves at a new time
